Mari Kempf

Biography:

Born in Berlin in 1987 and raised in the countryside of northern Germany, I am characterized by two very different worlds in which different rules apply. Autonomy has always meant a great deal to me, so I started working in several food service establishments since I was sixteen. After graduating from my A levels, I was drawn back to the city where I completed an apprenticeship as a Management Assistant for Digital and Print Media before studying German Literature and Language, as well as English and American Studies, in Potsdam and London.

Even though acrylic painting crossed my mind in my youth, it only recently became an integral part of my life. I am 100 percent self-taught and love exploring new techniques, tools, and materials. I conceive art as a form of meditation that nurtures my personal development and growth.

Artist Statement:

For me, art embodies a form of freedom that allows me to break out of invisibly prescribed conventions, guidelines, and rules usually prevailing in society. It gives me the chance to express myself far away from expectations and given standards.

The aspect that matters most to me is the process of creation itself. Often it starts with just one element that comes to mind, which then triggers the whole journey of artistic expression, whereby the result is a unique manifestation mirroring a specific emotional state in one moment of my life.
